Exterior. Designed as an open two-seater sports car from the outset, the Boxster has maximum structural rigidity. To achieve this, Porsche has used the most up-to-date lightweight steel construction techniques, and new support geometry in the front and rear of the vehicle. The result is high torsional and flectional strength, and enhanced occupant protection in a crash, while body weight has been kept comparatively low.
As with the 911, steel sheet zinc-coated on both sides is used – one reason for typical Porsche longevity. The mid-engine concept not only permits what for many drivers will be a completely new driving experience, it also provides space for two luggage compartments. After all, the Boxster is intended to be a sports car suited to everyday use. An innovative roof transport system even makes it possible to carry large objects such as sports equipment. The Boxster also manages to have excellent aerodynamics without looking at all like other cars – shaped in the wind tunnel.

Two luggage compartments. One luggage compartment at the front with a capacity of 130 litres, which means up to two cases. Behind the occupants you’ll find the engine and above it the recess for the hood, with more stowage space. At the rear you’ll find a second luggage compartment, also with a capacity of 130 litres, which means it will hold one large or two small golf bags. This gives the Boxster sufficient stowage space for a holiday or two.
Pics; left the front luiggage compartments with ‘get you home’ lightweight spare wheel. Right: rear copmpartment showin oil and coolant fillers and dipstick.
Hood. Release the main catch at the front, press the button, and approx. 12 seconds later the hood is stowed away securely out of harm’s way.
The concertina action means that little headroom is required, and when the hood is folded away the top is uppermost, ensuring even better protection of the interior. To prevent the hood being accidentally lowered when the car is in motion, the mechanism only functions if the ignition is switched on, the vehicle is stationary, and the handbrake is on.
Rear roll-over bars. The rear roll-over bars are made of high tensile stainless steel. Their shape matches the shape of the headrests. The upper safety belt anchorage points are located on the roll-over bars, improving the run of the belts for increased safety and ease of use.
Wind deflector. An additional three-part wind deflector is available as an option, one part of which attaches to the rear roll-over bars. The wind deflector is designed to blend in well with the lines of the open Boxster, and provides a further significant reduction in buffeting at head height.
The optional wind deflector kit includes a special storage case for stowing behind the seats and an additional map pocket in the passenger-side footwell.
Hard top. A hard top with interior trim is also available as an option. It is made of aluminium and only weighs approx. 25kg. Unlike plastic it does not splinter on mechanical impact. Rather than being welded, it is manufactured using the “punched rivet” process. This enables it to retain its precise fit much longer. The rear screen is heated. After all, you do use the hard top mostly in winter.
Roof transport system. Maximum: 75kg. This accessory can be used both on the open top vehicle and with the roof closed, with the soft top or hard top. The unique design and fitting system match the shape of the vehicle. Fitting is not directly to the body, which could easily lead to paint damage, but to easy-to-fit adapters which first need to be attached to the windscreen pillar and to the base of the B-pillar. The roof transport system weighs a mere 8kg. It can be fitted quickly and is equipped with an anti-theft device.
Aerodynamics. The outstanding c value of 0.31, coupled with axle lift coefficients of 0.13 (front) and 0.10 (rear), proves that in the Boxster form follows function. That’s the Porsche way.
Retractable spoiler. Since good aerodynamics are particularly important as speed increases, the spoiler only extends at around 120km/h. its effect is to reduce wind resistance by approximately 4% and rear axle lift by approximately 40%.
Underbody. A further feature, not immediately visible, is the covered-in underbody. It not only has a positive effect on the Boxster’s aerodynamics, it also protects the leads and cables on the underside of the car against damage.
Comfort and quality. The low wind noise and low degree of buffeting experienced by passengers when the hood is down demonstrate how good the Boxster’s aerodynamics are.
Interior design and equipment may be typical of a Porsche, but the look is nonetheless completely new and different. Here again, form follows function. Everything is designed around the driver, with the entire interior being based on ergonomic principles. All instruments and controls are placed in the best possible position, allowing rapid responses and high driving comfort to beat fatigue. Which is why driving a Boxster is a unique experience every time.
Based on ergonomic principles. All controls are easily accessible, and arranged according to importance and frequency of use. The same applies to the placing and size of the instruments.
Three main instruments in the classic round instrument format supply all important information. The large analogue rev counter is located in the middle, in customary Porsche fashion.
Below that there is a digital speed indicator which can simultaneously display information from the trip computer, if desired. The trip computer functions include average fuel consumption and speed, range, external temperature, and it emits an acoustic warning when a pre-set speed is exceeded.
A second, analogue speed indicator (which can be switched between mph and kmh) is provided by the round instrument to the left of the rev counter, which also contains a digital odometer and trip odometer. In addition to a clock, the right instrument has indicators for monitoring coolant temperature and fuel level. On vehicles with Tiptronic S, it also displays the selected gear.
