<p>This sensational 1987  Carrera 3.2.</p>
<p>This left hand drive 911 we purchased in Germany in 1999, then purchased once again in 2005 from a collector and now have the pleasure of seeing it here once again.</p>
<p>It was and is a sensational example both in terms of condition and specification. It is a really special 3.2, in original gloss black, without sunroof , with air conditioning and having had a subtle, but effective Strosek RS conversion carried out whilst in Germany at considereble expense.</p>
<p>The Strosek RS is not only beautiful, it is significantly lighter than a normal 3.2 and therefore feels even more alive and eager. Inside is black leather  with a sports seat and air conditioning.</p>
<p>We currently have it in the workshop and are carriying out a full and detailed service.</p>

<p>Prior to sale I always like to actually drive every Porsche that passes through my hands, &#8216;I bet you do&#8217; is the usual reply, but honestly it can be quite difficult to find the time and occasion to use them. However, we all have our cross to bear and I get on with it and rarely complain.</p>
<p>Although this Porsche 993 had only just been driven across Europe to me here in Cargreen, it still needed a test and I had the perfect opportunity.  My marketing chap Gavin from Evocative Solutions in Plymouth runs a  web site called &#8216;Petrol Blog&#8217; , it&#8217;s an interesting, quirky blog for car enthusiasts and one of the things he organises is a &#8216;Dawn Raid&#8217;. This consists of a group of what is now known as petrol heads, meeting at some obscure service station early in the morning and going for a drive on interesting roads. The only qualification is getting out of bed at the crack of dawn. Leaving my wife tucked up under the duvet, I quietly got dressed and crept out of the house as though on a secret mission and with more enthusiasm than I usually muster in the morning.</p>

<p>The Porsche for this job is this very special 993 Turbo. Left hand drive, built by Mr Brombacher of FVD  in Germany. These folk are well know for their large horsepower conversion work on Porsche. And this one was built new by FVD for a favoured (and wealthy) client &#8230;&#8230;.he got something amazing.</p>

<p>So a quick rundown, its the renowned air cooled 3.6 flat six with 520hp and enormous midrange torque, FVD chassis with  adjustable shocks and running about 30mm lower than standard, a special clutch, modified gearbox and a host of other detail changes. As always it&#8217;s the detail that form a significant part of the huge cost and make a Porsche like this work well.   </p>

<p>Ready for action, with the dawn breaking and the birds singing, my 993 looking quite innocent covered in dew, I hopped in, turned the key and gently and quietly crept out of the drive. Pootling out of my village this wasnt difficult, that&#8217;s the beauty of a well developed  911 like this and a credit to FVD, it is tractable and easy to drive slowly. The couple of miles through the narrow roads help it and me warm up and the only give away to what lies in wait is the very stiff suspension that does jiggle about a bit on these lumpy lanes. I am grateful for the original Porsche seats.</p>

<p>On to the main road and of course at this time of the morning its all but deserted. Who else would venture out this time of the day? Give it a few more miles to thoroughly warm up and up the pace.</p>
<p>And the pace up&#8217;s very very rapidly. The midrange go of this 993 is staggering. The sort of acceleration that makes you gasp. It is relentless, every gear shift brings an undiminished acceleration,  a continuous heavy shove that is hard to describe. It&#8217;s an effort to shift quickly enough, and a challenge to keep up with it. This Porsche flies. It is awesome. The sound is like that of a muted race car, but that is soon left behind you as the speed builds.</p>

<p>I remember reading in an original brochure for the early Porsche 930 turbo of the late seventies, that Porsche believed the 930 should be challenging for an expert driver. I don&#8217;t suppose that would  be &#8216;politically correct&#8217; any longer, but take it from me, this 993 needs expert hands to even start using its potential and is most certainly truly an enjoyable  challenge.  Today with the roads are still damp I was grateful to have the superb 4 wheel drive system working under me.  </p>
<p>Squeezing the accelerator coming out of corners the speed builds so quickly that you need to be  concentrating on the job. Listening to the music wasn&#8217;t an option. You will be leaving corners so much more quickly than in even a normal Porsche, therefore you might be arriving at the next bend 20-30 mph more than you might normally.</p>
<p>Fortunately the brakes are superb too, they  banish speed so well yet without the ABS intruding and its now, entering a corner on a damp road that you appreciate the superlative feel that Porsche provide through the turbo brake system. Although requiring a masculine shove, these brakes are fantastic and more than adequate for this 911.</p>

<p>Generally four wheel drive cars  are not my favourite often loosing a sense of balance.  With a Porsche the 4 wheel drive 911 is still a pleasure but I  would usually prefer the delicacy of a two wheel drive 911. In this case though, the 4 wheel drive system is a welcome feature and does nothing to spoil the drive and everything to make this 911 devastatingly effective.</p>
<p>With power like this its often the case that the chassis cannot keep up with the power, on this FVD Turbo the reverse is true, its when you extend the car that you realise how good the FVD developed suspension is.</p>
<p>Turning into the corners showed not a hint of indecisive understeer, it went wherever I pointed it, giving plenty of feel and a nice weight to the wheel. I cannot tell you if Mr Brombacher has changed other details in the chassis as he is of a secretive nature, I expect he has paid attention to many many details. All I can say is that the steering and chassis of this 993 is extraordinary. I couldn&#8217;t ask for more. It goes where you point it, corners with little hint of body roll, controls the immense shift in weight between being full on the power and then full on the brakes.</p>
<p>Stringing the corners together is a challenge as in a car of this performance there are few true straights to get be able to take a rest, just corner after corner and a car made for driving. That&#8217;s the philosophy behind all Porsche, they are made for the pleasure of the driver but this one has a stronger taste.</p>

<p>I covered about 100 miles that morning, getting back for an early breakfast and pootling though the narrow roads back to my village as though nothing unusual has occurred. The only give away was the amount of brake dust, the travel stains and the lower level of fuel. It made my day, my month and made the hard work of dealing with Porsche all worthwhile.</p>

<p>In a previous blog I mentioned that we had been asked to renovate a 1979 Porsche 911 3.0Sc for a client in Ireland. I thought you might like to see the end result, here she is.</p>
<p>It takes such a time to get all the details right and its the detail that makes the difference, using the right screws, the right rubbers, the correct gaps and so on. patience, attention to detail and product knowledge are all required in abundance. Buying and selling 997 is an easier task. This was hard work, but really rewarding.  </p>
<p>The body was already good, without corrosion or damage, therefore it was mostly just cosmetic paintwork required. The front had already been dismantled and re painted when we got the car, so this was a matter of putting it back together, waxoyling as we went, replacing or refinishing items that required it. The rear we stripped to bare metal, removing the rear screen, the targa hoop, replacing all the seals and gaskets, removing the rear wiper, cutting holes in the left door for a left mirror, welding the engine cover and finally painting in the original solid black to match the rest of the car. Gallons of waxoyl  were used in the hope this 911 would last another 20 years. We also fitted inner wing shield to offer lasting protection from muck and debris. The 16&#8243; Fuchs wheels were refinished and new Bridgestone SO2 fitted and balanced. </p>
<p>New lights, new beading, seals and gaskets were used. All the time checking alingment and replacing clips and fittings. A new loom was made for the left mirror, usung the correct Porsche tape to encase it and the correct changeover switch.</p>
<p>The interior was dismantled, new carpet to the original design and spec was fitted to the center floor and the front floormats replaced, we refurbished the heater control between the seats, the pedals got new rubbers, the throttle pedal new. New OE speakers  were placed int he original undamaged door trims a new water membrane fitted and window felt replaced.  New door pockets replaced the typically warped originals. The seats were in good condition but were dismantled for repainting of the brackets and replacing the tilt mechanism wire. We even repaired the original quartz clock rather than replacing it. The clocks each have a build date on them which should of course be a little earlier than the build date of the car so keeping them original seemed like a nice touch. A more modern Becker stereo finished it off with a hidden IPOD lead in the glove box. The Targa roof received a new OE cover, new headlining and new seals front and rear were fitted first dry then glued in.</p>
<p>The gearbox and clutch were known to be good , but the engine was dismantled to cure an oil leak, inspected, new piston rings, seals, gaskets and a few other tweeks that  Andy Moss at Sportscar Services in Honiton thought worthwhile. Andy also cleaned and refinished the motor, replacing the exhaust system with a full stainless steel set up which sounds superb and adds a little torque to the bottom end. Engine tinware and crossmember were powder coated as were various other brackets on the underside of the car.</p>
<p>We replaced the front luggage carpet with a new high quality carpet, not original but so much nicer than the cheap item originally supplied. fitted it out with new tools, a tyre inflator, hardwired a battery optimiser and even refinished the spare wheel.</p>
<p>Having assembled the 911 and made a 4 wheel alignment and final check, next on the list was a good test drive. That was my job.</p>
<p>For this, I took it on a trip to Newquay, a journey of about 150 miles, on twisting B roads and fast A roads. It performed superbly. Great fun on the open road, a lovely responsive and urgent motor just willing you to press harder. With the steering wheel communicationg every change in road surface and tyre loading,  it was an absolute pleasure.  You can cover ground really well and get yourself into proper trouble if you forget the speed. It was wonderful. Much like I remember a 911 SC from when I was a lad&#8230;..</p>
<p>The last job was preparing the cosmetics. For this we empoyed the best chap we knew of. Simon Belli runs a business called Prestige Detailing in Exeter. Simon isnt cheap. Nor is he average. He charges for his work but his work is to a standard way above anything I have seen before. This chap works and works, using all sorts of machinery, compoiunds, modern waxes and materials to make his subjects gleam in a way you wouldnt belive. He is all the time inspecting the paint with a bright light, scrutinising it for the smallest of flaws and eradicating them on sight. He took two days buffing and polishing and although hard to see in the pictures, it was incredible, flawless to my eyes. On solid black thats some task. </p>
<p>Several months of work, 6 visits from the client, 100&#8217;s of man hours and many different top class specialists we had a 32 year old 911 that was almost too good to use. However, a 911 can be used, and should be used, thats the attraction, reliability without fuss. Even at this age.</p>
<p>It has now been collected by the owner and driven back to his home in Ireland where I feel certain it will be appreciated and cherished.</p>
